The smart meter rollout in the U.K. is expected to begin in September 2016. With the go-live date around the corner, WNS and Utility Week conducted a survey of senior industry figures to understand the expectations and concerns regarding the rollout. The analysis showed that there is low expectation as far as the goal of achieving complete smart meter coverage by 2020 is concerned. However, there is more enthusiasm among businesses as they are readying for it. The smart meter concept is likely to create more conversations around energy efficiency, and new products and services rather than billing and meter reading issues.
The rollout will definitely test utility companies in areas such as process, people and technology. The right customer engagement is crucial for the success of this initiative. The Internet of Things (IoT) and analytics will be pivotal in creating possibilities for more innovations even as utility companies move into the role of energy consultants.
